Nigel McGuinness will compete at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam.
McGuinness came to the ring on the September 11 episode of AEW Dynamite and noted that there would not be a world title match at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam, as Darby Allin was putting his title shot on the line against Jon Moxley. He stated that this was great for the champion, Bryan Danielson, who was recovering after Moxley attacked him at AEW All Out.
McGuinness then said that he believed that the world champion should compete at Grand Slam. He pulled out a contract and said he had to watch Danielson’s career for years, and he said that Danielson’s success should have been his. McGuinness said that Danielson was afraid of him and the one match that everyone wanted to see.
He revealed that Tony Khan was not afraid, as he had signed the match for Grand Slam. Nigel McGuinness announced that he would face Danielson at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam. He questioned whether Danielson would show up, or if fans had already seen his final match. McGuinness said that the ball was in Danielson’s court.
Update: Tony Khan later announced that the match would only take place if doctors cleared Danielson to compete.
McGuinness, a former ROH World Champion, was forced to retire due to injuries in 2011. He has been working as a commentator in recent years. McGuinness came out of retirement when he competed in the Casino Gauntlet Match at AEW All In.
Danielson and McGuinness had a memorable rivalry in ROH during Nigel’s in-ring career, and they clashed in some unforgettable matches.
