Bryan Danielson On Not Wrestling CM Punk In AEW: Sad Isn’t The Right Word

Bryan Danielson thinks wrestling CM Punk in AEW would have been “cool and fun”.

The American Dragon made his first appearance in AEW at All Out 2021. He appeared at the end of the show, confronting The Elite following Adam Cole’s debut.

This was the same show that CM Punk wrestled his first match in seven years on. Punk wowed Chicago in a Bret Hart-inspired bout with Darby Allin, kicking off his controversial run in the company.

Sadly, the pair never shared the ring during this time. Their last singles match came in the WWE in 2012, while their only one-on-one encounter in Ring of Honor was all the way back in 2004.

Bryan Danielson spoke with Inside The Ropes (H/T to Fightful for the transcription) prior to AEW All In 2024. He was asked how he felt about not getting the chance to wrestle CM Punk in AEW.

The AEW Champion replied that he wasn’t sad, but thought that it was a match that was going to happen. He added that Bryan Danielson vs CM Punk would have been “really cool and fun for me”, had it happened.

“Sad isn’t the right word.” Bryan Danielson said. “It was something that I thought was gonna happen that didn’t happen. So it’s like, it would’ve been really cool and really fun for me.”
