Cody Rhodes is at the top of the mountain now, but a year ago, he was lamenting a loss to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, a moment that Rhodes said he couldn’t allow to define him.
Speaking to Inside the Ropes Magazine, Rhodes reflected on his match with Reigns at WrestleMania 39. Rhodes credited the fans with helping him carry through the adversity, saying he always wanted to act like a leader even without a belt, and he knew eventually it could pay off.
“Leaving WrestleMania [39] without the title, I just finished telling you how I say all the time I’m not concerned,” Rhodes said. “That might be the most false “I’m not concerned” that I ever gave, because of the amount of time that fans may stick with you. You never know and can’t take it for granted. There were characters like Undertaker, Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, John Cena and Randy Orton who maintained the attention of the audience for years and years. You don’t know if that’s going to be you.”

Rhodes went on to say that despite the loss, he knew he could never let himself reach rock bottom, because he could never take his eyes off the prize.
“I can’t allow myself to really get rock bottom because it’d be super irresponsible of me to do that, because as much as I have the fever and love this, the things I love the most are my wife and my daughter and I don’t help them at all by taking my eyes off the prize,” he said. “Me being older when I had Liberty means I got to continue to put in the time because, in terms of something that’s in the back of my mind, a goal I have is I want her to see me on top. She needs to start getting older so I can do that.”
