Peter Segal is disappointed that Heels got canceled, but it wasn’t a huge surprise.
The American filmmaker worked as the executive producer and director for the pro wrestling drama series. The show starred Stephen Amell in the main role, in addition to CM Punk and AJ Lee also taking supporting roles.
Fans and critics praised the show, giving it an 8.0 rating on IMDB. However, this was not enough to save it from being canceled last year.
Peter Segal appeared on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum asked him why Heels was canceled after the second season, questioning whether he felt disappointed about it.
The director expressed his disappointment, although he wasn’t shocked about the decision. He explained that the show was expensive and they struggled to find an audience for wrestling on the smaller Starz network.
Peter Segal mentioned that they are “flirting” with the idea of putting Heels on Netflix. This consideration comes after WWE signed a $5 billion deal with the streaming giant.

“It was expensive and we were just on the wrong network.” Peter Segal said. “But the cool thing is, you know, Netflix just paid $5 billion for the WWE and we are flirting with the possibility of landing there, but we’ll see. I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that, but there it is. It would be great if it worked out,” Segal explained.
“I was very disappointed. Not shocked because, you know? We had a show that was on a network that not a lot of people saw. And so we thought if we were on a streamer or HBO, or Amazon or Netflix,” he added. “We know there are people out there that enjoy professional wrestling, so why can’t we find them? And I think that we just, like I said, we’re on the wrong playing field.”
Netflix acquired the non-exclusive rights to air Heels from Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution in April. It was initially reported that the show would start streaming in July. However, it has not been added to Netflix yet.
