Bryan Danielson Told Gedo He’d Love To Compete In G1 Climax, Says It Seems Unlikely

Bryan Danielson’s NJPW run could have potentially led to his G1 Climax debut, according to the AEW star.

Bryan Danielson faced Kazuchika Okada at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 in January. He then competed at New Year Dash!! and The New Beginning in Osaka. Given the working relationship between AEW and NJPW, some fans buzzed about the possibility of Danielson entering the G1 Climax tournament.

In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Bryan Danielson stated that he told Gedo, NJPW’s booker, that he would love to.

“Over the winter, I told Gedo, the booker in New Japan, ‘I would love to do the G1 this year,'” Danielson said. “I’d just wrestled Zack Sabre in Japan [in February]. I was so excited. It all happened in the heat of the moment.”

Bryan Danielson is not among the wrestlers who are competing in the NJPW G1 Climax 34, which began earlier in July. Moving forward, the veteran expressed his hope that it would be possible. However, he admitted that it seemed unlikely. He highlighted his health and his family as two reasons why.

“I would like to think it would be possible,” Bryan Danielson said. “I don’t limit possibilities in my mind. But it seems unlikely. My neck isn’t doing real great right now. So there’s my health. But even if Tony [Khan] freed me up for the entire summer and said, ‘Go do the G1,’ I wouldn’t want to leave my wife and kids for that long. I don’t think my wife would think it was good for my health, either.

“I’ve always wanted to do the G1. I don’t know if that’s going to be in the cards for me, and that’s OK.”
