CM Punk: The Stars Had To Align For My WWE Return, It Wasn’t Something I Was Yearning To Do

CM Punk knew his return to WWE would be big, but it ended up being a much bigger deal than anyone thought it would be.

Punk spoke with Denise Salcedo at San Diego Comic-Con about his path back to WWE after a ten-year hiatus. CM Punk was asked if there was a specific moment when he realized it was the right move or that he “needed” to return. He said there wasn’t, explaining that a lot of things needed to happen for it even take place.

“No, because it was never a thing that I was yearning to do,” Punk said. “There was a lot of things that had to happen for the pathway to clear. The stars had to align, there had to be a full moon, and a lot of dominoes fell in order for us to get here. There was never a [feeling of], ‘Man, I’d really like to go back.’”

Punk also said that Vince McMahon’s departure from the company helped move things along. He clarified that it was probably a mutual feeling, noting the history the two had with each other.

“Vince [McMahon] being out of the picture, I think probably illuminated the way. I think that might have been one of the biggest things. And that’s both ways, for anybody who’s going to obviously sensationalize a headline. It wasn’t me, it wasn’t him, it was just there’s a lot of history there and all of the sudden, one of us is removed from the equation and I think it changed a lot of things.”

Salcedo then asked Punk’s biggest concern once he signed. Punk said he wasn’t sure he had a major concern outside of, “Are the people going to remember me?” He said it sounds ridiculous, but it’s always a voice in your head as a performer in the public eye.

“I knew it was going to be a big deal,” CM Punk said. “It wound up, I think, being a way bigger of a deal than any of us realized.”
