Jim Ross Wishes CM Punk Was Still In AEW, Thought He ‘Contributed Greatly’

Jim Ross misses CM Punk and wishes he was still in AEW.

The former AEW Champion’s exit from the company was highly publicized. He was fired after a backstage fight with Jack Perry at Wembley Stadium. This was the second such incident, and he was let go in September last year.

Jim Ross recently spoke to Conrad Thompson on his Grilling JR podcast. He began discussing CM Punk’s current run in WWE, accusing fans of not knowing how to accept heat these days.

JR complimented the finish to Clash at the Castle, and is looking forward to seeing Punk vs McIntyre. He called the angle a “Strategic use of an injured wrestler who could not be involved in physicality, i.e., CM Punk.”.

The AEW commentator then revealed that he missed having Punk in AEW. The WWE Hall of Famer admitted that he wished he was still in AEW, comparing his exit to Junkyard Dog leaving Mid-South some years ago.

“I miss CM Punk. I thought he contributed greatly to the AEW roster when he was with us. To be perfectly candid, I wish he still was. How do you not want a talent the level of CM Punk still with your company? It just didn’t work out. Personality-wise, it just did not work out, and that’s unfortunate.” Jim Ross said.

“But I’ve seen that happen before. I mean, when Junkyard Dog left Mid-South, that was huge. Dog was the bell cow. He was the guy. He left in a different way; he went through a different door to get out. But it still hurt the company at that time because he was so entrenched, so special. What are we going to do now? Well, you replace it, pick it up, and let Cowboy do the book.”
