One of the biggest heels in the professional wrestling business was John Bradshaw Layfield. A notable feud of JBL was the one he had with Eddie Guerrero. The rivalry was on and off for months in the second half of 2004. The majority of their rivalry revolved around the top prize of the company, the WWE Championship.
Recently, JBL took to Twitter to reflect on his rivalry against the Latino Heat. The On This Day in WWE Twitter account shared a throwback interview that took place between JBL and Michael Cole on an episode of SmackDown. During the interview, the Wrestling God took shots at Eddie Guerrero and his mother, who at that time had suffered a heart attack, (storyline) caused by JBL.
JBL mentioned that Guerrero had his input in that promo as well.
“The line at the end came from Eddie. ‘My family came here in a boat, not an inner tube’. Eddie called me one night so happy-he had heard that somewhere and gave it to me. I told him “you are gonna get me killed Eddie”, he would just laugh and say “no, it’s good heat Ese!” JBL tweeted.
The WWE Hall of Famer also mentioned that Eddie Guerrero was a fan of his JBL character and often pitched ideas to help elevate the gimmick.
“Exactly! Eddie loved the JBL character. Eddie loved being a heel. He would call me all times of day and night with ideas. In Japan one time he called me at 2am and we talked for an hour about different things JBL could do the next night at Budokan. Without Eddie, JBL would be a footnote in history,” JBL tweeted.
Do you think JBL was one of the best heel characters in the business?
