Gunther Says He Did Not Want To Be Part Of WWE Product Before Triple H Took Over

Gunther says one of the reasons that he hesitated to come to the United States was because of the previous regime.

Gunther was one of the top stars in NXT UK, which was overseen by Triple H and Shawn Michaels. After initially not moving to the United States, he finally did so, and he had a brief run on NXT stateside. He then joined the main roster while Vince McMahon was still in charge in 2022. McMahon retired in July of that year, and Triple H took over WWE creative. The Ring General” went on to have a record-setting reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion.

In an interview with Gorilla Position, Gunther was asked to share his thoughts as to whether he thought his reign would have been similar under Vince McMahon. (H/t Jeremy Lambert of Fightful for the transcription)

“I don’t know, but it was one of the reasons why, for a long time I didn’t want to go to the US. The product before Triple H was not what I enjoyed,” Gunther said. “I just didn’t want to be part of that. I am who I am and that’s what I can do best. A big part of that is I need to have my time in the ring and have that time to put on the matches I can put on.

“That chance would not be there under the old regime. With Triple H, he always saw that in me, and he always had that vision for me. I got lucky that a lot of things in my career took place at the right time. It was a little bit of a leap of faith when I first made the move over. Everything worked out in the end.”

Sami Zayn ended Gunther’s historic reign at WWE WrestleMania 40. The former champion now has his sights set on the King of the Ring tournament.
