Rey Mysterio Doesn’t Mind Taking Photos With His Mask Off Now

Rey Mysterio is okay with fans posting photos of his face.

The WWE Hall of Famer is known over the world for his distinctive mask. The mask is a long-held tradition of Lucha Libre, with some wrestlers never taking their mask off in public.

While he has previously wrestled with his face on shows in WCW, Mysterio began wrestling in a mask again when he signed for the WWE in 2002. In recent years, Mysterio tried to cover his face if he was in photos with friends. However, in 2024 he does not mind being recognized by fans when he is without his face covering.

Rey Mysterio spoke to The Wrestling Classic before WrestleMania 40. The former WWE Champion was asked how he felt taking pictures with fans without his mask on. Mysterio replied that it was a new era, and he doesn’t mind being recognized without his mask now.

“It’s something that I really don’t mind. A lot of fans recognize me, it’s kind of like a new era of wrestling. For a while, I did wrestle without my mask [In WCW] and a lot of fans know me because of that. But overall, i always try to give the fans the time and respect if getting asked for a picture, or being recognized. To take the time to be able to take a picture with them. Some actually ask me, ‘is it okay if I post it?’. I always give them the okay. Do whatever you want. That’s your picture now. If I took a picture with you.it’s because it’s okay. But I respect the fact and I appreciate they ask me if its okay if they can post.”

Rey Mysterio Didn’t Think WWE Would Hire Him After WCW Folded

After WCW went under, Rey Mysterio waited a while before WWE signed him. Jim Ross told him to sit on his bumper Time-Warner deal, and wait until it expired before signing with the WWE.

The legendary Luchador revealed this when he spoke with Randy Zellea of Back Sports Page, saying:

“Because when WCW was closed down, I didn’t think I was gonna get hired by WWE. They told me to sit back on my contract. And I thought that was a way for them to say we’re interested, but we’re really not. But sure enough, when my WCW contract ended, they called me right away. And we sat down, and we locked in a deal. So to see that growth over the past 20-plus years has been really amazing.”
