Sting retired following his last match at AEW Revolution, and a new report provides an update on the situation.
In the main event of AEW Revolution, Sting and Darby Allin defeated The Young Bucks to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championship. At the post-show scrum, Tony Khan announced that the titles would be vacated, and new champions would be crowned.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) reports that AEW sources indicated that the Young Bucks coming out of the match without the titles was made weeks ago. However, they were planned to stay near the top of the title picture.
Per Sapp, AEW and Tony Khan were “adamant” that Sting go out as a winner and a champion. Khan has long made it clear that honoring Sting was important to him. Sapp also writes that Sting headlining AEW Revolution had been the plan since virtually “The Icon” announced his last match would be there. As previously reported, he had a “big say” in the Young Bucks being his last opponents.
Additionally, AEW Revolution was moved from its initially planned location in the midwest. The company wanted a more fitting place for Sting’s retirement. Additionally, Sapp writes that there is no word of any additional dates for Sting in AEW. At the post-show press conference, he stated that he had no interest in being an agent or a manager.
