Roderick Strong Says Yelling Names Gimmick Caught On So Much, He Does It To His Dogs

Roderick Strong still manages to pop himself.

All Elite Wrestling‘s Roderick Strong recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard. Strong was asked about the recent promo where he finally stood up out of his wheelchair on AEW TV. Strong said he actually broke the microphone he was holding when he spiked it on the ground. He didn’t know he’d be so amped up during the segment.

“Both of those things [I broke it, and I was told to be careful with the equipment]. And I said, ‘Sorry, I just blacked out.’ And I was like, ahhhh, like this is getting the energy out. I didn’t know I’d be so hyped to do that. But that was the only way I could get it out. It was either gonna be that or just continue to scream.”

Pritchard joked that Strong has been known to scream people’s names from time to time on AEW programming. Strong said his yelling gimmick caught on so much that he didn’t even realize he was doing it at home as much as he does.

“Oh yeah. All the time. [Even with] my dogs. For real, one night, my wife was like, you know what — because I’d let the dogs out, and then I’d follow them around. I was like just yelling, I was like, ‘MELLO!!! MELLO!!!’ I didn’t even realize that I’d just done that for so long. It popped me.”

Inspiration for ‘ADAM’

Strong recently told Chris Van Vliet on Insight how the idea to yell people’s names came up. Strong said he got the idea for yelling from his son.

“Some of the production people started coming who worked behind the scenes. And they’re like, yeah, the fans are screaming it before the show. It’s like, whoa. Then I was just like, Oh my God, because a lot of stuff was pre-taped and or, you know, filmed off-site. So then, like, the first time that I got to really, like after a stretch go out in front of the people. And I was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is ridiculous,’” Strong explained.

“And it’s and it’s kind of funny, because whatever, like the yelling happened. But then it was like, I can’t just yell everything. It’s funny because my son does the thing when he’s fired up,” Strong added. “And he’s so mad. He just will yell one of the words he’s saying. Sometimes it’s the right word. Sometimes it’s not. And then he just talks really calm afterwards. And I thought, like, oh, man, that’s hilarious. So that’s kind of the yelling and then like this monotone speaking was kind of just mimicking him.”
