Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael has been diagnosed with MRSA, and is currently getting a blood transfusion following his hospitalization this week.
After being hospitalized with an infection, NFL legend Walter Payton’s son Jarrett Payton took to Twitter to reveal that McMichael — who is currently battling ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, aka “Lou Gehrig’s disease”), and was admitted on Thursday evening. — had MRSA, and was getting the procedure done.
Payton asked for people to keep Steve, his family, and close friends in your thoughts as he fights through this infection. McMichael has been battling ALS since 2021, and he was hospitalized with sepsis and pneumonia in August 2023.
Last week, McMichael was elected to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame Class of 2024. Mongo’s family hopes he will be healthy enough to travel to Canton, Ohio, for the Hall Of Fame induction ceremony this summer.
In wrestling, McMichael had a legendary career, as he was a color commentator with WCW, and he had a prominent run as a member of the Four Horsemen. He is a former WCW United States Heavyweight Champion.
