Shawn Michaels has worked in a variety of roles throughout his time in WWE.
WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels was a recent guest on the Chase & Big Joe Show. When asked about his and Triple H’s transition from performers to coaches in the company, Michaels spoke about how he and Hunter have navigated it.
“I’ll say this because I came in these doors coaching, but the thing is, I got the opportunity to train a little bit,” Shawn Michaels said. “The one thing you can’t do, and I think that’s one of the things Hunter and I realized early, is that they’re not going to be you. They’re not going to have that same feeling and that same instinct.
“And look, that’s when you begin to try to find good people around you to delegate. Then look if you can find people that at least understand your vision, and you can do your best to paint them a picture or whatever. That’s something that I feel like Hunter and I are pretty decent at doing.
“We’re also pretty good about, again, setting up a direction and sort of an idea and a vision for what it is we’re looking for if you can explain that well enough. You can nine times out of ten get there. But look, you also have to understand people are going to do it a little differently. And they have to bring their own flavor to it.
Shawn Michaels believes he’s better at creative than coaching
“So look, it’s a delicate balance, and honestly, I don’t know if I’m answering the question for you appropriately, but we’ve been able to, I think, make a decent transition. I’d say that I’m better creatively and voicing my creative vision, probably better than I was as a coach and a trainer, so to speak, because that is hard for me to do.
“A lot of things out there I just felt instinctually, and a lot of things just came very natural to me that you can’t teach to people, and you can’t make it come natural for them. So you do your best to put them in that situation and then allow them to find it on their own.
“And that’s what I love about NXT is allowing each of these men and women to one, find it within themselves, not rush it, not put them in a box, and also, I don’t know again, find a way that if they don’t do the same way that I did it. They can make it their own and still make it unique.”
