GUNTHER is a confident champion, but he needs to make sure it doesn’t become cockiness.
WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard spoke with GUNTHER at the 2024 Royal Rumble media day. GUNTHER was under the microscope plenty in 2023, as he was on pace to break Honky Tonk Man’s Intercontinental Championship reign record.
The Ring General did eventually eclipse that mark, and his record-setting reign continued into 2024. GUNTHER was asked if holding the title got any easier since he broke the record, but he says he takes things day by day.
“Well, confidence grows. But if it grows too much, it gets dangerous. It’s [about] balance. It’s been a great run so far, a great reign. I’m taking it day by day, whatever’s next,” he said.
GUNTHER’s next title defense is against Kofi Kingston on the January 29 episode of WWE RAW. He noted Kofi’s tenure (and his four Intercontinental title reigns), and said he can’t take Kofi lightly.
“On Monday, I defend it against Kofi. Kofi’s been around for more than a decade in this company. He’s seen it all. So I cannot underestimate someone like that,” GUNTHER added. “I’m still confident to do it again, but we’ll see where it takes me.”
