Ahead of Saturday’s Royal Rumble, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes met in the ring, and had a heated confrontation about each other’s past.
In the ring tonight on WWE RAW, both Punk and Rhodes wasted little time in getting into it. Punk recalled their time together while Punk was helping keep watch over Rhodes, but said on Saturday he wouldn’t be doing that. Instead, he’d be going right for him.
Punk then said he wanted to talk about Rhodes’ father. Punk said that he didn’t grow up in wrestling royalty, and actually had to earn his way to the top, which, in a way, makes him more of “the American Dream” than Cody is.
Rhodes countered by going back to Punk’s infamous “pipe bomb” promo, and said that Punk laid out the blueprint to a wrestling revolution, but then left in a loud way. Instead of passing the torch, Rhodes said, Punk simply dropped it, and so he picked it up. Everything Punk spoke about, Rhodes said he did, which makes him more “CM Punk” than CM Punk.
Punk wasted little time replying, telling Rhodes that he did carry WWE for two years now, and just as it tends to happen, “a much bigger star” suddenly showed up to take it all away from him. This time, Punk says that star is him. Rhodes said that he could only continue forward on his path, and the two ended the segment by going nose-to-nose as the fans cheered.
