Hiroshi Tanahashi Reflects On Having Three World Title Matches In 2023

Hiroshi Tanahashi says he feels a sense of accomplishment after he had three world title matches in 2023.

In an interview with NJPW’s official website, Hiroshi Tanahashi looked back on 2023, as he was asked about how his eventful year started with a world title shot at NJPW Battle in the Valley. Tanahashi noted that he also challenged for the AEW World Championship and the IMPACT World Championship.

“[I also challenged] MJF for the AEW World title, and Alex Shelley for the IMPACT belt,” he said. “I challenged for three world titles and didn’t win any of them (laughs).”

When asked whether he felt some embarrassment, Hiroshi Tanahashi said, “Well, I do feel a sense of accomplishment though. This year I was pretty much wrestling internationally every month. But I wasn’t able to get those results, so the question is what am I missing, right? The biggest feeling I have is that I wasn’t able to live up to expectations fans had for me. The people still believe in me and I have to answer to them.”

Tanahashi will look to begin 2024 with a major victory when he challenges Zack Sabre Jr. for the NJPW World Television Championship at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 on January 4.

Outside of the ring, Tanahashi was recently appointed NJPW President and Representative Director. Check out his comments about this new role here.
