Shawn Michaels is happy to see CM Punk back in WWE.
Following CM Punk’s exit from All Elite Wrestling in September, WWE Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative Shawn Michaels was asked about the possibility of bringing “The Second City Saint” into WWE’s NXT product.
In response, Michaels stated that he would welcome Punk into NXT if the opportunity arose. Michaels also noted that he always enjoyed working with CM Punk through their various work in WWE over a decade ago.
Last weekend, CM Punk made a thunderous return to WWE, surprising fans with his arrival at the conclusion of WWE Survivor Series: WarGames. During a recent interview with Peter Rosenberg for Cheap Heat, Shawn Michaels shared his elation at seeing Punk officially back on the WWE roster.
“Like everybody else, [I was] happy, thrilled, holy cow. I got asked a couple of months ago, ‘Well if you had a chance to use him, would you?’ Yeah, who wouldn’t? I understand business, I wasn’t always the most popular guy with people, but I was really good at my job. That’s one of the reasons I’ve had one here in the WWE for almost 40 years. Again, I’m dependable and I’m good at my job. I think if you are that, there is always an opportunity here, especially if you want one,” Michaels said.
“I’m happy for him, I’m happy for the company. I’m happy for the WWE fanbase, the WWE Universe. Stories like this are always fantastic. Even if they’re controversial, that’s part of what makes them fantastic. Look, I don’t always know what’s going on. Truth be told, I don’t think sometimes they know what’s going on. Unpredictability is just that, unpredictable. That’s what makes this job so fantastic and so unique, unlike anything else. That’s why we’ve continued to thrive for 40-plus years.”
While surprises are oftentimes spoiled on social media, the plan for Punk’s return was kept pretty tightly knit within the higher-ups of WWE. This, as Michaels, pointed out, made Punk’s appearance all the more unpredictable, which ultimately cultivated an even bigger buzz.
