Adam Copeland On Past Matches With Christian Cage: We Couldn’t Live Up To Our Expectations At That Stage

One of the biggest signees for AEW was none other than former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Hall of Famer Adam Copeland (formerly known as Edge). He is set to face his best friend Christian Cage in a trios match at the Full Gear pay-per-view.

Recently, The Rated R Superstar was interviewed by Trib Sports. During the interview, interviewer Justin LaBar asked Adam Copeland about the few times both he and Christian Cage competed against each other in one-on-one matches during their time in WWE.

The pair tagged together plenty of times but worked against each other sparingly. Copeland mentioned that the main goal was to ensure they worked hard to live up to their expectations. Meeting those expectations, however, was not an easy task.

“I mean singles, we probably had like televised like four maybe. Maybe three. It’s not a huge sample size at all… It’s not too many. It is also at a time when we were both really trying really hard. And you always try hard. But I mean trying hard to the point where we weren’t going to live up to what we were expecting. So we put in extra set of pressures on ourselves that we were not going to live up to.

“And I also don’t think we were ready to live up to it at that stage in our careers. Now, with the amount of experience with the different things we both bring to the table mentally… I just… It’s a completely different animal now. The last time we wrestled was in Toronto. I want to say it was like 2010. And just the difference from that match to the ones in like 2001 or whatever it was, they were night and day,” Adam Copeland said.

Edge and Christian had a months-long feud over the Intercontinental Championship in 2001. They traded wins at the Unforgiven and No Mercy pay-per-views, with Edge picking up a “final” win in February 2002.

The pair worked other matches against each other, but they didn’t have a traditional singles match again until a 2005 WWE live event. Edge won that match, as well as the singles match they had on WWE RAW in Toronto in May 2010.
