Tony Schiavone made his return to play-by-play commentary on the October 14 episode of AEW Collision. Schiavone has worked as an interviewer and commentator on AEW Dynamite in the past, among other roles. But before Saturday, he had not called the action on AEW Collision.
Speaking on his What Happened When podcast, Schiavone discussed how the opportunity came about.
“I told Tony [Khan], and this was months ago, I said, ‘I would like another chance at doing play-by-play,'” Tony Schiavone said. “I said I could probably do Rampage. He said, ‘Okay, let me think about about it.’ I thought I was gonna end up doing play-by-play on Rampage. But then he hit me with this, and you don’t say, ‘Nah, I don’t wanna do that.’ You say, ‘Yeah, hell yeah, I’ll do it.’
“I’ve told him this many times, and I’m sincere about this. Kevin Kelly is a great announcer. He is so smooth and so good. I really enjoy working with him and Nigel. I know we’ve only worked together once, but we’ve been together backstage for a number of months now.”
Schiavone’s career spans nearly 40 years, and he was arguably the voice of WCW during the Monday Night Wars.
WrestleZone will have coverage of AEW Dynamite as it airs on October 18.
