AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam Results (9/20/23): MJF vs. Samoa Joe, Multiple Title Matches

All Elite Wrestling presented AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam from Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 20.

Among other matches, MJF defended the AEW World Championship against Samoa Joe. Plus, Claudio Castagnoli faced Eddie Kingston in a Title vs. Title match. Elsewhere on the show, Saraya defended the AEW Women’s World Championship against Toni Storm.

The results are as follows:

Title vs. Title: NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion Eddie Kingston vs. ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli

Kingston and Castagnoli trade strikes. The match spills to the outside, and Kingston gains the upper hand. He chops Claudio. Castagnoli levels him and takes control. Back in the ring, Castagnoli dumps Kingston with a deadlift gutwrench powerbomb. Kingston fires up and dumps Castagnoli with a German suplex. Castagnoli suplexes Kingston onto the ramp. Castagnoli stomps Kingston and grounds him.

Claudio floors Kingston with a lariat and maintains the advantage. Castagnoli boots Kingston in the face. Eddie gets a two-count with a backslide. He dumps Catagnoli with two suplexes. Kingston chops Castagnoli repeatedly. Kingston and Castagnoli trade blows. Castagnoli drills Kingston with a headbutt and a lariat. He goes for the Ricola Bomb, but Kingston reverses it into a pin attempt. Claudio drops Kingston with an uppercut.

He hits the Ricola Bomb for a two-count. Kingston hits two backfists, suplexes Castagnoli, and hits a Northern Lights Bomb for a near fall. Kingston hits another backfist and a Kawada powerbomb for the win.

Winner and new ROH World Champion: Eddie Kingston

After the match, Castagnoli extends his hand, and Kingston shakes it.

Matt Taven and Mike Bennett were at Roderick Strong’s bedside in the hospital. Taven reads Strong a card. Adam Cole shows up and has a tense confrontation with Taven and Bennett. Cole says he has to leave so he can go support MJF. Strong gets upset and tells him to leave.

In an interview, Christian Cage previews his match at AEW Rampage, where he and Luchasaurus will face Darby Allin and Sting. He challenges Allin to face him and Luchasaurus on AEW Collision, but Sting won’t be allowed at ringside. Cage tells him to bring “the boy”, seemingly referring to Nick Wayne.

Chris Jericho vs. Sammy Guevara

Jericho and Guevara square off and feel each other out. They trade chops. Guevara gains the upper hand. Jericho drives Guevara into the corner and gains the upper hand. Guevara hits a corkscrew dive to the outside. Jericho suplexes Guevara off the apron, and both men land hard on the floor. Back in the ring, Jericho grounds Guevara and controls the action. Guevara gets a two-count with a Spanish Fly.

Jericho hits Guevara with a clothesline. Guevara drops Jericho with a Codebreaker. He dives onto Jericho at ringside. Jericho catches Guevara with a dropkick. Guevara counters a springboard dropkick. He hits a diving cutter for a two-count. Jericho counters the GTH and locks Guevara in the Walls of Jericho, but Sammy escapes. Guevara hits an avalanche cutter. Sammy goes for the Lionsault, but Jericho blocks it and hits a bulldog. Jericho gets a two-count with a Lionsault.

Guevara rocks Jericho with a knee strike and hits the GTH. Guevara goes up top, but Jericho counters a Shooting Star Press with a Codebreaker.

Winner: Chris Jericho

Jericho extends his hand after the match, and Guevara hugs him. Guevara kicks Jericho below the belt and shoves up down. Don Callis walks out and stands by Guevara’s side. They leave together.

MJF and Adam Cole roll up in the parking lot. MJF sends a heated message to Samoa Joe and vows to choke him out. Cole gets a call from Roderick Strong and walks away.

Backstage, Sammy Guevara and Don Callis briefly bump into Daniel Garcia. Guevara and Garcia stare each other down. Callis tells Guevara “this kid is money” to prevent a potential escalation.

AEW International Champion: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Rey Fenix

Fenix takes the fight to Moxley before the bell ring and dives onto him. They get in the ring, and the match is underway. Moxley takes control and stomps Fenix. The bout heads to the outside, and Moxley tosses Fenix over the barricade. He spikes Fenix with a DDT on the flow. Fenix drops Moxley with a cutter and gets a two-count. He gets another two-count with a frog splash. Moxley drills him with a lariat. Fenix stuns Moxley with a kick. They had back to the outside.

Fenix dives onto Moxley while Moxley is hung up over the barricade. Moxley takes control and grounds Fenix. Fenix hits a diving footstomp. Moxley stomps Fenix on the stage. The champion gets a two-count with a piledriver. Fenix hits a senton off the top and gets a two-count with a piledriver. Fenix hits a piledriver for the win.

A video package highlighted how several teams will compete for a shot at the ROH World Tag Team Championship match on AEW Rampage.

AEW Women’s World Championship: Saraya (c) (with Ruby Soho) vs. Toni Storm

Saraya slaps Storm and talks some trash. Storm smiles and chops Saraya. Soho distracts Storm, who knocks her off the apron. Saraya drops Storm and gains the upper hand. Storm crawls under the ring and gets a shoe. She hits Soho with the shoe. Storm hits Saraya with the shoe and gets a two-count. Storm drops Saraya with a DDT onto the ramp. Saraya rallies and hits a sunset flip powerbomb.

Soho distracts Storm, and Saraya blinds her with spray-paint. Saraya gets a near fall with the Nightcap. Storm kisses Saraya and hits the Storm Zero for a near fall. Saraya dodges the hip attack and hits the Nightcap for the win.

The broadcast team runs through the cards for the upcoming shows.

AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Samoa Joe

MJF gets a special pre-match video where he meets up with a young fan. The bell rings, and MJF faces off with Joe. Joe dumps MJF on his injured neck. The challenger overpowers MJF and controls the action. He squashes hm with a senton. Joe slams MJF to the mat. The challenger maintains the advantage. MJF rallies, but Joe levels him. Joe rips MJF’s Mets-inspired shirt off, and the crowd boos.

MJF gets fired up and takes the fight to Joe. He bites Joe and goes for the Kangaroo Kick. MJF hits the Kangaroo Kick, and Joe heads to the outside. Joe counters a drive and slams MJF neck-first onto the apron. He gets a table, sets it up and slams MJF through it. Joe goes for the pin, but MJF kicks out. Joe exposes part of the floor, but MJF fights him off. The challenger piledrivers MJF onto the bare floor. He gets MJF in the ring and goes for a pin, but MJF kicks out.

MJF spits in Joe’s face and hits the Liger Bomb. Joe and MJF trade blows. MJF goes for a sleeper, but Joe reverses. MJF hits Joe below the belt and puts on his Dynamite Diamond Ring. Joe pulls the referee in the way, and the official takes the ring. Joe hits MJF below the belt and hits the Muscle-Buster for a near fall. Joe locks in the Coquina Clutch. Adam Cole comes out and cheers MJF on. MJF rallies and escapes the hold. MJF goes for a sleeper, but Joe drives him into the corner. The referee falls out of the ring, and MJF uses some tape to choke out Joe. The referee calls for the bell, as Joe passes out.

Winner and still AEW World Champion: MJF

Adam Cole hides the tape. Joe shoves Cole, and MJF steps in front of him. Joe offers him a hand, and MJF shakes it. Doctors check on MJF, and he celebrates with Cole.
