Chad Gable didn’t dethrone Gunther, but he did defeat the WWE Intercontinental Champion.
On the August 21 episode of WWE RAW, Gunther defended the WWE Intercontinental Championship Gable. The Alpha Academy standout earned a title shot by defeating Ricochet, Tommaso Ciampa, and Matt Riddle on the August 7 episode of WWE RAW.
Gunther and Gable battled it out on August 21, and Gable nearly pulled off the upset on multiple occasions. In the end, he floored Gunther with a German suplex into the timekeeper’s area and made it back into the ring. Gunther failed to answer the count, so Gable won by countout.
Though Gunther retained the gold, Gable dealt him his first singles loss since he moved to the main roster in April 2022.
