The Sandman recalls sharing a ring with Steve Austin in ECW way before he became Stone Cold.
ECW legend The Sandman recently spoke with Bill Apter of Sportskeeda. When asked about Stone Cold Steve Austin having a similar gimmick, Sandman said he was doing it for years before Austin did. But contrary to popular belief, he had no issue with it.
“Yeah, of course. I’ve been doing it for years,” The Sandman said. “His last two matches were with me and Mikey Whipwreck before he signed with Vince. He got to Vince and started doing it later. I didn’t care. People think I would get mad at that. I wasn’t mad at all about it.
“That’d be like me getting mad at everybody that’s carrying a Singapore cane to the ring right now. Dude, everybody — the girl [Hikaru Shida] had one last night in the main event. She had a Singapore cane in that match I was telling you about.”
When asked what it was like seeing Steve Austin in ECW before becoming Stone Cold, Sandman said he just saw him as another guy who was easy to work with.
“I don’t know; he was a worker to me,” The Sandman said. “He was just a regular dude. He was easy to work with. We did a Three Stooges spot, just stupid shit. That’s the kind of stuff I like to do. So he was cool.”
