Cody Rhodes says that, due to a personal issue, leaving AEW was the easiest thing he ever did.
Rhodes helped launch AEW in 2019. Alongside Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, he worked as a co-Executive Vice President, and he was a top star on AEW TV. “The American Nightmare” shocked the wrestling world when he departed AEW in February 2022. In April, he made his return to WWE at WrestleMania 38.
In an interview with Sean Neumann for GQ Sports, Rhodes was asked whether leaving AEW, a company he helped build, was difficult. He stated that it was the easiest thing he has ever done. The former TNT Champion noted that he had a personal issue, and he decided to steer clear of it.
“No, it was the easiest thing I ever did. And it’s because I had a personal issue that I wasn’t going through, over, or around. I was just going to steer clear of it. If anything, I wanted to look at what we had done at AEW and say, “Amazing, what a wonderful time, a beautiful memory, and very special in every way. And now it’s time to move on.”
“You know, all good things. And it certainly was like that with me. So I mean it not in a negative way, like I was happy to burn rubber and speed out, but it just wasn’t a decision that was difficult for me at all. Or for Brandi [Rhodes, his wife and former AEW executive].”

Rhodes has cemented his status as one of WWE’s top stars since he came to the company. He won the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble and headlined WrestleMania 39. There, he unsuccessfully challenged Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns for the gold.
