Drew McIntyre: There’s ‘No Ceiling’ For Gunther, It’s Awesome To See His Evolution

Drew McIntyre is poised to absorb some massive chops from Gunther this Saturday.

While they’ve faced off in multi-man matches before, WWE SummerSlam will mark the first ever one-on-one bout between Drew McIntyre and Gunther. Following his triple threat loss to Gunther at WrestleMania 39, McIntyre finally returned at Money in The Bank. Upon his arrival, McIntyre confronted “The Ring General” and staked his claim for another shot at the Intercontinental Championship. After weeks of build-up, “The Scottish Warrior” will now challenge Gunther for the title this weekend at SummerSlam.

During an appearance on Under The Ring, McIntyre laid out a preview of their title match. “We’re going to beat the absolute hell out of each other,” McIntyre said. “I know without even thinking about some ideas, and I do have some ideas of how it’s going to go, but it’s going to be pretty simple. It’s going to be pretty easy to follow for not just our fans, but for people watching for the first time who don’t necessarily understand the cool flips that some of our superstars like Ricochet do, but they understand people being hit and being hit back and that’s what Gunther and I are specialists at.”

“I think we’re going to take it to another level because realistically, just like Sheamus and Günther had the incredible match at Clash [at the Castle], we had it to top at Mania. We had people rocking from beginning to end, and now Gunther and I have to top that triple threat match.”

Just Keep Swimming

In further evaluating Gunther’s in-ring work, McIntyre issued great applause for the metamorphosis Gunther has undergone since joining WWE in 2019.

“He’s certainly got no ceiling and it’s awesome to watch his evolution. You got to keep evolving in the industry. You gotta keep getting better and you got to keep swimming or you drown inevitably. To watch his evolution, he was great outside of the company in independents. He was great in NXT UK. His matches have always been phenomenal. He’s always had that hard-hitting unbelievable style. But to also see his transformation and body wise, and Imperium come together and see their chemistry together as an act, it truly works in WWE to the point where all the superstars have came back and been brought in over the past couple of years.”

“I’d put [Imperium] right at the top. They are such an important act on the show. I’d say move on to the world title, but why? He’s made the Intercontinental Title important. Right now, you get Gunther versus Drew McIntyre for the Intercontinental Championship. To some people that might be just as big, if not bigger, than the world championship matches.
