Dominik Mysterio Reflects On Skipping NXT, Learning From Top WWE Stars

Dominik Mysterio looks back on his journey to stardom.

Unlike many young wrestlers, Dominik, the son of Rey Mysterio, didn’t start out in NXT. Instead, he jumped to the main roster right away. He started feuding with Seth Rollins, and he made his debut at WWE SummerSlam 2020.

Speaking with Alistair McGeorge of Metro, Mysterio reflected on skipping NXT and landing right on the main roster in 2020. Mysterio emphasized that he’s grateful to be in the position that he’s in.

“I think there’s definitely pros and cons to it, depending on how you look at it,” Mysterio said. “I was blessed and very fortunate to be in the position that I’m in, [and] I think just the way that I came about it, and the people that I was surrounded with, I just don’t think it made sense [to go to NXT], especially with who I was gonna learn from.”

Mysterio also noted that he worked with main-roster stars like Rollins, Sami Zayn, and The Usos shortly after he started wrestling on WWE TV. He made it clear that he worked with some of the best, and it doesn’t get better than that.

“I had a chance to be in there with them, not once or twice but multiple times, working all the house shows with them, opening up SmackDown with them,” Mysterio said. “My experience was a little different, being able to learn from those top, top guys.”

Dominik Mysterio Talks Growing Up In Wrestling

In the same interview, Dominik Mysterio discussed how he grew up in wrestling. He pointed out that his father being a wrestler helped him gain an understanding of the business early on. With that in mind, Dominik stated that nothing about wrestling has shocked him, but he continues to learn.

“I don’t know if anything really shocked me about [the business],” he said. “I think more respect for what my dad did, and for what we do for a living. But I think… I grew up around this, man, this is all I’ve known for my whole life.

“I started traveling with my dad when I was four or five years old, I started appearing on TV when I was eight. So this is all I know, none of this is new to me. The only thing that’s new to me is my learning experiences that come from being in the ring, and I learn something new every day, so I’m very grateful and very blessed to be here.”

Dominik will defend the NXT North American Championship at NXT Great American Bash. WrestleZone will have coverage of the show as it airs.
