Booker T: King Booker’s Accent Had To Be Stupid, But It Had To Be Serious

Booker T had plenty of fun creating the voice of King Booker.

During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Booker T spoke about the inspiration behind his accent as King Booker. Booker used a “royal” accent to address his subjects, and he knew it had to float between serious and ridiculous.

“I was the greatest king of all time; they can’t even do it anymore because I was such a great king. It’s dead, it can never be done. And that was by design as well; that didn’t happen by accident. I knew being King Booker was going to break the mold. No one was ever going to be able to follow that act ever again.

“The accent, the accent just had to be stupid. It didn’t have to be real. But it had to be serious. It had to be you know, I had to believe it. And then at that, you know, then I will break character and go street. But I will kick back into my character,” Booker explained.

Booker T said he still tells his students that whatever character they’re portraying has to be on another level. He says fans need to embrace it and want to come back for more, which is what King Booker ultimately accomplished.

“Everyone knows when they walk in the door, what they’re gonna get here. But when they walk out, and they go, ‘God, man, I can’t wait to get back and watch it again,’ that’s because they felt a certain way, and that’s what King Booker brought to the table,” Booker noted. “And so much went into that whole thing. I couldn’t even do it for that long. I had a heel run and I left WWE after that, because I was so tired at the end of it because it was taxing, but it was great at the same time, the best work I ever did.”

Booker T Presents Sherri Martel Classic, Talks Sharmell's WWE HOF Induction

A King Is Only As Good As His Queen

During a recent interview with WrestleZone, Booker T spoke about his Sharmell’s 2022 WWE Hall Of Fame induction. Booker said Sharmell was integral to his success in WWE and she added several more years to his career.

“For me, as it pertains to my career, I was gonna quit the company, actually, I was just tired and we had just gotten married, Sharmell and I and I didn’t wanna be on the road and then they said ‘why don’t we bring Sharmell on board too?’ then Sharmell came on board and I though that was pretty cool because now we get that chance together. I remember we slept in the car one night because we had about five hours before our flight and we didn’t wanna get a hotel and Sharmell’s my ride or die right there, she’s my chick. So, for me, Sharmell has always enhanced me positively,” he stated. “I tell people all the time, the King Booker run, that gimmick, people would’ve never saw King Booker if it wasn’t for my queen, Queen Sharmell. If it wasn’t for Queen Sharmell, that wouldn’t have happened, that’s the 100%, God’s honest truth.

“She extended my career at least three to four years. Those three to four years were the best three to four years in my wrestling career. I give her a whole lot of props, the most props for going into the WWE Hall of Fame and I appreciate what they’re doing for her. Every reunion when they bring people back, Sharmell’s never been brought back but to be brought back for the ultimate recognition and them saying we really appreciate everything you’ve done for the business and everything that you gave, we really appreciate it and this is how we’re gonna thank you for it,” Booker noted. “I appreciate that, more so than anything.”
