Megan Morant is feeling great following her kidney donation.
During a recent interview with Steve Fall of Ten Count, WWE correspondent Megan Morant explained the process behind her recent kidney donation that occurred on July 12.
Last November, Morant was speaking to a coworker backstage and found out that his kidneys were only functioning at 5%. Upon hearing that kidney donation surgery is laparoscopic and only requires a couple of days in the hospital, she spent some time researching the process. The following Monday, Morant told her coworker and that she would gladly test for him to see if she was a match.
“So I went to NYU, I was set, like I wanted to do this. I got a call back a couple of days later that said I was not a match for Kirsch. I was sad, I was like, ‘I really wanted to do this and now I can’t. This is a really big bummer.’ But I told myself, ‘If it ever comes up again in my life, I will definitely donate a kidney.
“So, a couple weeks later — I used to work for the Patriots and I’m on a group chat with all my old coworkers. We’re also very close. Somebody in our group chat was talking about how they had kidney stones. I was sort of being sarcastic, I mean, I wasn’t being sarcastic, but I was like, ‘Hey, you know, if you need a kidney, let me know. I just tested a couple weeks ago to donate a kidney to a coworker.’ And the next thing I know, my former boss said, ‘I’ll take that kidney,’ and I thought he was kidding. He was like, ‘No, I’m being serious, I need that kidney.’ I was like, ‘For what?’ He said, ‘My wife Margaret is in kidney failure.'”
After speaking on the phone, they realized she wasn’t a match for his wife. However, Morant could participate in a chain donation process that could result in the woman receiving a kidney that is a match. Morant began the testing process in November and received the news in April that she was a candidate to donate.
Morant informed her boss Michael Cole of the opportunity. He was completely supportive as his wife received a living kidney donation 21 years ago. Following WWE’s tour of the UK, Morant was set to donate her left kidney on July 12. Luckily, her kidney went to UCLA and the recipient responded well. Now that the chain donation process has began, Margaret will hopefully receive a kidney by the end of summer.
“I feel good. I’m very lucky,” Morant said of her current status. “When I found out about all of this, after I did reading about it, I realized I was really the perfect candidate to do this. I’m young, I’m healthy, I’m in shape, I run marathons. I said, ‘Listen, I could do this and bounce back.’ The two questions I had for the doctors were, ‘Can I have kids and can I run marathons?’ And the answers to both of those were yes. So I said, ‘Let’s do it.’
“I feel great. I was discharged yesterday from the hospital. Most people stay two nights. They told me 90% of people stay two nights. I said, ‘I’m not 90% of people,’ but I was ready to stay two nights if I needed it. Thankfully, I didn’t and I came home yesterday. [I’m] tired, sore, but I did walk a mile today and I showered. So it’s a good day and I feel good. I finally looked at my incision and I’m really proud of it.”
