A new documentary about Andy Kaufman is in the works.
Kaufman is a legend in the wrestling world, as he memorably appeared on “The Late Show With David Letterman” with Jerry “The King” Lawler in 1982. Lawler slapped him on the show, and the moment went down in history as a shining example of the crossover between wrestling and pop culture. Kaufman was inducted into the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023.
Matt Grobar of Deadline reports that the first authorized feature documentary on Kaufman is in the works. Award-winning documentarian Clay Tweel is set to direct the program for Campfire Studios, Seven Bucks Productions, Worldwide Pants Incorporated and Fifth Season, while EVP Mary Lisio will oversee the project.
Per Grobar, the film will be produced as part of a partnership with The Andy Kaufman Estate, which will offer the team “unprecedented and exclusive access to Kaufman’s family, as well as personal and never-before-seen archives and private recordings.” The film is set to dive into the origins of Kaufman’s creative process and his definition of “funny.”
Dwayne “The Rock Johnson”, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Brian Gewirtz of Seven Bucks Productions will serve as producers, as will Campfire’s Ross M. Dinerstein, and Shannon Riggs. Letterman is attached as an exec producer for Worldwide Pants. Tom Keaney, Tyler Kaufman, Tweel, Tommy Avallone, Ross Girard and Rebecca Evans are also attached to the project.
