AEW Collision Results (7/8/23): CM Punk Battles Samoa Joe, FTR Face Bullet Club Gold

AEW Collision Results – July 8, 2023

AEW Collision kicked off with quick hype promos for the two Owen Hart Cup semi-final matches featuring Ricky Starks, Powerhouse Hobbs, Samoa Joe, and CM Punk.

CM Punk comes to ringside in his street clothes to a pretty positive reaction from the live crowd. Punk says it’s great to be alive in Regina on a Saturday night. Punk says he understands the gravity of the moment and calls tonight’s match with Samoa Joe the biggest match of his career. Punk says this feels like the finals of the tournament, but it’s not because he’d be looking past Powerhouse Hobbs and Ricky Starks.

Punk says time will stand still tonight and it’s been 18 years since he’s been in the ring with Samoa Joe one-on-one. Punk says Owen Hart is bigger than him or Samoa Joe and the crowd chants for Owen. Punk says if it wasn’t for Owen a lot of that locker room would be empty, and he might not be here right now.

Punk says he knows he’s in hockey country, but he’s not superstitious and touches the trophy not because he deserves it but because he will earn it. Punk says he can’t promise a victory tonight but he believes and he promises that win, lose, or draw that he’ll pour his heart out until there is nothing left to give and he’ll leave everything in the ring for him, for the fans, and for Owen.

A video hype package plays showcasing the history between CM Punk and Samoa Joe in Ring of Honor.

Ricky Starks defeated Powerhouse Hobbs to advance to the finals of the Owen Hart Cup Tournament

  • QT Marshall inadvertently distracts Aubrey Edwards and prevents Powerhouse Hobbs from getting a pinfall victory on Ricky Starks. Hobbs confronts Marshall on the apron and gives Starks enough time to recover, and shoves Hoobs into Marshall before hitting him with the spear to pick up the pinfall victory.

QT Marshall tries to apologize to Powerhouse Hobbs after the match and Hobbs lays him out and shoves him to the ground. Marshall begs off and Aaron Solo comes in and eats a spinebuster for his troubles. Hobbs pulls down the straps and closes in on Marshall but Harley Cameron dives in front of Marshall to protect him. Hobbs stands down and leaves the ring.

We hear from Miro backstage who says many men have lost themselves after a deal with the devil but only one man has found himself after a showdown with his God. Miro says he’s ready to fight anyone and hurt them in ways they cannot hurt him because no one can hurt the man who has nothing left to love or covet. Miro says he can’t be tempted from his path, he must walk the righteous path and be what his God was not. He is Miro and he senses a big battle is coming that everyone has been waiting for.

Tony Schiavone interviews Willow Nightingale backstage who says this wasn’t how she wanted to return to AEW Collision. Athena shows up and says Nightingale single-handedly ruined her Collision debut and her first victory.

Athena questions if Nightingale’s injury is legit and says that she’s only delaying this match because she doesn’t want to take another loss to her. Nightingale says tonight will be crummy but now she has to prepare for Rampage where she will go on to win the entire Owen Hart Tournament and then challenge Athena again for the Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion.

Athena says she can’t even get cleared tonight, she says Nightingale has never beaten her and there’s no chance she’ll beat her next Friday night.

Julia Hart (w/ Brody King) defeated Bambi Hall

  • Julia Hart applied the Hartless Lock and defeated Bambi Hall via submission

We hear from Malakai Black, who explains why he took Andrade El Idolo’s mask. Black says the difference between them is that El Idolo didn’t become who he was until he took the mask off. But Black has to hide in plain sight.

Black says Hart reached for his mask because it controls who he is. Black says the mask gave him more strength when he took it off than he ever had when wearing it. Black compares El Idolo to a child who can’t let go of his teddy bear. Black says together the whole world will see how truly great Black knows that Andrade is.

We hear from Andrade El Idolo backstage with an immediate response for Malakai Black who says he’s a businessman. If Black thinks he hides behind his mask, he’s not a coward like Black. El Idolo says his mask is everything to him. It’s about his family, his culture, his country, all about all Latin people. El Idolo says when he has his mask on, it’s about business. When he takes his mask off, it’s time to fight and win.
