Billy Corgan isn’t sure if he wants to take a certain risk.
As the National Wrestling Alliance continues to grow its brand, NWA owner Billy Corgan discusses the possibility of running a show on the heels of other marquee wrestling events such as WWE’s SummerSlam or WrestleMania.
Speaking with Steve Fall of WrestlingNewsCo, Corgan revealed that NWA almost held a show during the weekend of WrestleMania 38 in Dallas, Texas. Due to undisclosed circumstances, though, those plans fell through.
Corgan then explained why he’s been hesitant to mold an event around busy weekends like those.
“I’ve been reluctant to do it for a variety of reasons, which would be honestly too boring to get into here. I do think it is weird, and I’m just saying this as an overall point, that if you’re trying to compete with the WWE, and I’m including myself in that categorization because obviously everybody who’s out there is trying to compete with everybody else. If WWE is the market leader and you’re trying to compete with them, aren’t you reinforcing their hegemony if you’re appearing in the same town of the week that they do, basically trying to glom on to the audience that’s coming in?” Corgan questioned. “I think not so subtly in a weird kind of way, you’re saying, we accept that we’re a number or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7. So I just find that a bit weird.”
While Corgan continues to weigh that option, he clarified that he welcomes NWA talent to seek their own independent bookings during those respective weeks. In the end, however, he isn’t completely sold on the idea of NWA hosting a show in the same town and on the same weekend as a major pay-per-view.
“I don’t begrudge the talent going into town,” Corgan said. “We have all tons of NWA talent going into the town to make money on gimmicks and in some cases, depending on contracts and stuff, wrestle for other companies. So, I don’t sort of block that or stop any of that type of stuff. But as far as the NWA mounting a show and trying to share a stage in a very crowded stage, and I certainly hear the stories where people spend a lot of money, the card looks good, and they get 47 people at the show because there’s another show that people want to go to more. That seems a bit like a bit risky to me, so I’m still on the side of the fence of not going to happen.”
