Welcome to the latest WrestleZone Roundup, where we take a look at some of the most fun stories from around the wrestling world over the past week.
Tony Schiavone Scissors
Veteran AEW commentator Tony Schiavone got in on the fun when he was in the ring with The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens and Max Caster) and Billy Gunn on the June 20 episode of AEW Collision, as the trio took him by surprise by welcoming him into their scissoring celebration.
Speaking on his What Happened When podcast, Schiavone discussed the moment and noted that he didn’t see it coming.
“My favorite part was being able to do the scissor [with The Acclaimed]. That as tremendous. We had talked about that earlier. We had talked about how we were gonna do the interview and everything, and I just thought they were gonna scissor. I didn’t really know it was gonna be me, so that was kind of a surprise to me. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. They get a hell of a response from the fans. We had a great crowd.”
Too Sweet Swoggle?
It’s easy to forget now, but Swoggle, formerly known as Hornswoggle, is part of an impressive wrestling family.
In storyline, Hornswoggle is the son of Fit Finlay, whose real-life son, David Finlay, currently leads Bullet Club in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Speaking with Nick Hausman for Inside The Ropes, Swoggle noted that he keeps in touch with his family. (H/t Haus of Wrestling for the transcription).
“Yeah, I do,” he said. “A few weeks ago, I teamed with Brogan Finley, his youngest son,” he recalled. “We had a tag match in Chicago, and that, coming full circle, seeing Brogan as a legit child, like, child-child with his thumb in his mouth, and now I’m tagging with him was incredible. We FaceTimed Fit after the match, and we all had a good laugh. So that’s like a weird dream, six-man of mine. Me, Brogan, and David all teaming together like a weird six-man. Just all Fit’s kids.”
When his family ties to Bullet Club came up, Swoggle said, “Come on! Scott D’amore was in Bullet Club,” Swoggle said. “I have full reign to be in Bullet Club! Give me a payday, brother!”
Danhausen Calls Out Pepsi Phil
Earlier in the week, the reported match between KENTA and CM Punk at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door was called off. Before Punk’s match with Satoshi Kojima was announced, Danhausen playfully teased that he’d be willing to face “Pepsi Phil” at “Foreboding Door”, with a condition.
Ricochet Talks Spider-Man
Fans are still buzzing about Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. WWE star Ricochet joined the conversation and said he loved it, but Tom Holland remains his favorite Spidey.
Ricochet elaborated by noting that the different Spider-Man brought something to the table, but Holland stood above the rest.
AEW is Cinema?
AEW could be up for an Emmy, as both AEW Dynamite and AEW: All Access are on the nominations ballot for the 2023 Emmy Awards.
Vic Joseph’s Stash
NXT commentator Vic Joseph cleared the air about his candy stash and noted that he nearly passed out once, so he started to make sure he had food with him at the desk.
