Adam Cole is happy to give anyone advice backstage who wants to get better as a performer.
All Elite Wrestling‘s Adam Cole was a recent guest on the Swerve City Podcast to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about people asking him for advice about their matches backstage, Cole says he appreciates that because it shows him that they’re serious about wanting to improve.
“I appreciate anytime any talent comes up and says, ‘Hey, what do you think?’ If you could watch my match and you could tear it apart or give me critiques, that, to me, shows that they’re serious about the idea of maybe wanting to improve,” Adam Cole said. “And the beautiful thing about wrestling, as you know, is like everyone has different varying opinions, and there are some pieces of advice that could apply to you.
“And other times, maybe it doesn’t apply to you, but it sparks an idea in your brain of the way you want to approach something. So in that sense, I don’t mind at all. I never mind when people ask me that.”
When it comes to advice on how to be successful in wrestling, Cole said that comes down to two main pieces of advice. One, it has to be your top priority. And two, you have to be someone that people would want to ride in a car with.
“I get asked that question all the time,” Adam Cole admitted. “Whether it’s at a signing or someone who’s just starting out in wrestling, and I always say that it’s a really, really broad answer, but I don’t think I’ve ever completely said this publicly. But I say two pieces of advice. I say number one, and again, these are going to seem so obvious, but it’s the most important thing. Number one, wrestling has to be your number one priority.
“You have to be willing to miss birthdays, family reunions, and hanging out with your friends on the weekend. It’s sad to say, but it’s true. You have to completely commit yourself to it. And then, number two, be someone that other people want to ride in a car with. Which really is a fancy way of saying just be a good person at the end of the day because, again, there are so many veterans with so much knowledge that could pass the information on to you.
“And if you’re someone who’s hard to be around, people aren’t going to go out of their way to try to help you or try to teach you. So being someone that other people like to be around, it’s amazing the progress and the success that people see when they have that mentality. In 2023 there are so many great pro wrestlers that you can’t afford to be hard to deal with.
“Because there are so many guys who are so so great and also great to work with that you would — again, to this day in 2023, I haven’t met someone who is like, oh my God, this guy is impossible to deal with, and still stayed at a place for a super long time. Because now everyone — you just have to be easy to deal with.”
While elaborating on his second point, Cole believes it’s harder to get away with stuff in 2023 backstage than it was back in the day.
“It’s not to say like of course we all everybody makes mistakes and we all have times where we’re maybe not proud of something we did or something we said,” Adam Cole said. “But more it’s like you said it’s like a general mentality of just try your best to be the best you can around everyone that you work with, around everyone you interact with. Seriously, I think that’s so so important. So yeah, like I said, in 2023, people can’t get away with doing whatever they want as much as maybe people used to.”
