Matt Cardona reflects on Cody Rhodes losing at WWE WrestleMania 39.
The self-professed Deathmatch King and Queen Matt Cardona and Steph De Lander were recently guests on Barstool Rasslin’ when host Brandon Walker asked for their thoughts on Cody Rhodes coming up short to Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
“I could’ve seen it going either way, I’m not the booker man. I would’ve made him the champ, but I see the long game. It’s like if Austin didn’t win at WrestleMania 14,” Cardona said.
Walker reflected on early WrestleManias having different results with Hulk Hogan involved. He’s wondering how WWE will recreate a big moment after both Sami Zayn and Rhodes lost back-to-back.
Cardona responded, “I’m not disagreeing with you, I definitely wanted Cody to win because he’s my friend and I told him to go back [to WWE]. I do like Roman, he’s killing it. He’s the f*cking man.”
De Lander chimed in, “I think what’s interesting on that point, though, is you said we’ve gone three years with Roman still standing tall, but we’ve had three years of record-selling WrestleManias, and it’s turned to a two-night Mania, and they’re still selling it out. So it’s like, ‘Are they doing it right?'”
When it comes to himself potentially returning to WWE, Cardona explained what he would need to happen.
“The two C’s need to be right, the cash and the creative… And, she [Steph] gets to come along.” When asked about a potential re-debut at AEW, Cardona said the same rules apply. “Listen, AEW is doing great. They’re about to sell-out Wembley Stadium.”
Rhodes didn’t finish the story at WrestleMania 39, but he will add another chapter to it when he faces Brock Lesnar at WWE Night of Champions on May 27.
