WWE is set to return to India in September.
During his appearance at the MoffettNathanson Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Nick Khan confirmed WWE would return to India for a live event this fall.
“We’re paying a lot of attention to India as well. We’re going to be doing a live event from India this September, which has not been announced yet, so consider that our WWE news of the day,” Khan said. “So we’ll be doing a live event there in September and we’re excited about that.”
Khan did not specify whether this would be a premium live event or a non-televised show. He also spoke about WWE’s popularity in India as well as how the company has excelled in becoming a global “turnkey” property.
“Netflix, like WWE, we’re a turnkey property. You don’t have to get a production truck, you don’t have to figure out how to produce it. You just have to do the deal and boom, we’re up and running in whatever country you want to run with. Netflix has had challenges in India, WWE is the second-most popular sport—and yes, of course, I understand, we’re sports entertainment, we’re not pure sport—but we’re the second most popular sport in India after cricket. Granted, it’s a distant second, but we’re still number two. So in terms of being able to generate [subscriptions] in countries like India, we think we can do it like nobody else.”
WWE’s last live event in India was a December 9, 2017 WWE Supershow event in New Delhi that was headlined by Triple H vs. Jinder Mahal.
The company also produced the WWE Superstar Spectacle that aired on January 26, but that was taped in the ThunderDome in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Superstar Spectacle was an event produced specifically in honor of India’s Republic Day and WWE’s partnership with Sony Pictures Networks India.
