Britt Baker: Breaking My Leg Was Ultimately The Best Thing That Happened For My Career

Britt Baker believes breaking her leg was a blessing in disguise for her professional wrestling career.

All Elite Wrestling‘s Britt Baker recently sat down with Jim Varsallone to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about her promo skills and if she had a lot of practice doing them on the independents, Baker admitted she never really talked until she got signed by the company, and her broken leg injury forced her to come out of her shell promo-wise.

“No, I don’t think I cut a single promo on the Indies. I ran from the camera and the mic,” Britt Baker admitted. “I was so afraid. I never wanted to cut a promo; I just was so not confident in talking or acting or any of that sort of that all came in AEW when I was turning heel, and I basically had to learn how to cut a promo.

“And specifically when I broke my leg and I the only way I was going to be able to be on TV is if I was talking because obviously, I couldn’t wrestle, so I really really leaned into help from Cody Rhodes and Chris Jericho and Kenny [Omega] and really dug into like who is Dr. Baker DMD and how can they still make this character entertaining when I can’t wrestle? And it was ultimately the best thing that ever happened. If I had to go back ten more times, I would rebreak my leg ten more times to get to the same character growth I had in that period of time.”

When asked about her future goals, Baker admitted that she couldn’t imagine her life without having some aspect of professional wrestling in it.

“I can’t imagine my life without having some sort of aspect of professional wrestling in it for a long, long time. So even when my time in the ring is up, I always want to be able to help somehow behind the scenes and whether that’s coaching or producing or, yeah, I mean commentary, which commentary is no joke. It’s a tough job.

“Tony Schiavone would be mad at me If I act like commentary is just a breeze, a walk in the park. It’s very, very hard. It takes a long time to get good at, but I’d be up for anything because, in professional wrestling, there’s so many things that go on behind the curtain that people don’t understand how important it is to the success of the show. There are definitely coaches, even more producers, but even the crew that fixes the lighting is all so important, and a lot of that goes unseen, but it definitely needs to be appreciated.”

When asked what her goals are in All Elite Wrestling, Baker said she hopes to help grow the company for the mainstream crowd.

“So I really want to help grow AEW the audience for the mainstream crowd,” Britt Baker said. “Because I think with the professional wrestling fans, the diehards, we’ve got them, they know our show, they love our show, and they watch every week. But I want to grow our product for people who maybe have never heard of All Elite Wrestling or just don’t even know it exists.

“And that would mean getting into more mainstream media opportunities, and I’ve been taking acting classes, and I’m auditioning for roles, and I have been very, very public that my all-time favorite show is Dancing with the Stars, which my coworker Chris Jericho was on at one point and I would love to be on that show someday.

“But I think we just want to grow this thing to make it bigger and better than what it already is. And just looking at the growth we’ve had again in the last four years, it’s insane. So if we can keep that going for the next three, four years, this thing is going to be out of control with the success that it’s bringing.”
