Wes Lee will defend the NXT North American Championship at WWE NXT Battleground.
Since Lee won the title, he has established his reputation as a fighting champion by defending the gold on multiple occasions. He has continued to clash with prospective challengers; in recent weeks, he has been feuding with Charlie Dempsey and Drew Gulak. During this rivalry, he has formed an alliance with Tyler Bate, and in recent weeks, Joe Gacy has warned Lee about Bate’s true intentions while also expressing his own interest in the gold.
On the May 16 episode of WWE NXT, Gacy and his Schism stablemates attacked Lee and Bate backstage. Later in the show, Lee came to the ring and told Gacy that if he wanted a title shot, he just had to ask. Gacy appeared on a platform in the crowd and emphasized that he intended to challenge for the gold.
Bate joined the fray and revealed that he wanted a shot as well. Lee seemingly felt betrayed, but he agreed to face both Gacy and Bate in a match at NXT Battleground.
