AEW star Anna Jay comments on the reaction to her “Fat Ass, Bad Attitude” shirt.
Jay sparked some controversy when she said she had a “fat ass and a bad attitude” on AEW TV. The saying was made into a shirt, which also sparked some divisive reactions.
Speaking with Phil Strum on Under The Ring, Jay was asked to share her thoughts on the reaction to the shirt. She noted that saying the line felt on-brand with the JAS, and she decided to roll with it because people say those kind of things about her anyway.
“I kind of knew, if I was gonna say it, it was going to create some sort of buzz, whether it was bad or good,” Jay said. “I don’t know. I thought it was just kind of on-brand with the whole JAS because everything’s kind of ridiculous in a great way. So I don’t know. I thought it fit, and I was like, you know what, people sometimes say these kind of things to me. Why don’t I just say it, [and] just see where it goes?
“Yeah, I just kind of went with it. I kind of thought about saying it for a little while, but I went back and forth. I was like, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I want to say it because it’s not really me personally.’ But it works with the JAS, and I just decided to say it, and that’s kind of how it happened.”
When asked to elaborate on the reaction to the shirt and the way some fans have used it to highlight body positivity, Jay noted that she thought it was great, and she believed others could relate to it/
“I think it’s great, and that’s kind of one of the things that I was thinking,” Jay said. “When I was talking to people about saying it, I was like, ‘I think this is great because I think a lot of women, I feel like they can relate, and guys too.’ Even guys backstage were like, ‘I want this shirt.’ I got Daddy Magic [Matt Menard] wearing it backstage, so it’s kind of funny. I kind of thought about that too. Honestly, it’s kind of a positive thing. So if I’m gonna say it about myself, then other people will wanna say it about themselves too.”
Jay recently faced Julia Hart in a No Holds Barred Match on the May 10 episode of AEW Dynamite, where Hart emerged victorious.
