You can’t see John Cena, but he sees the common bonds that two of his upcoming films share.
During an appearance on Monday’s episode of the TODAY show, John Cena shared how he got a role as a merman in the new Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie.
“You know what? It was honestly a happy accident. I think Barbie and Fast X share a lot of parallels. The cast list is amazing; the Barbie cast list is amazing, the Fast X cast list is amazing. So with a lot of opportunity,” Cena explained, “it was just a chance to maybe [reach out and say] ‘Hey would you guys be willing to have me if I could do something?’”
Cena said he ‘kind of’ pitched himself for this movie, although it was in an unintentional way.
“Kind of. Kind of, in an accidental run-in with Margot Robbie, I said I will pretty much do whatever you guys need because I really enjoy the movie,” he said. “They asked if I wanted to be a merman and I said, ‘Yeah, sure.’”
“Having worked with Margot before [in 2021’s The Suicide Squad], we literally ran into each other as friends,” Cena said. “We were filming across the street; Fast X was filming across the street from Barbie. They said why don’t you do Barbie? I said I’ve been trying and Margot makes a lot of the decisions for that, I said I’ll do whatever you need.”
Fast X hits theaters on May 19, while Barbie will be released on July 21.
