Chavo Guerrero On Worked Rey Mysterio Comments: People Wanted News, I Gave It To Them

Chavo Guerrero says people wanted news, so he gave them what they wanted.

Last week, Chavo Guerrero came under fire for some comments he made during a virtual signing with Captain’s Corner. During the broadcast, Chavo reflected on his history with Rey Mysterio and took some digs at Mysterio, claiming Rey needed to stop making a living off of the Guerrero name. Eventually, he doubled down on Twitter and said Rey was prostituting the Guerrero name and pushed for Rey to donate some of his earnings to people that deserved it.

Chavo eventually said that the whole thing was a work, and now explained why he took it in the direction he did before and after the stream aired.

“It was a little tongue-in-cheek and I was joking around with it a lot, but people ran with it,” Chavo explained during an interview with Bill Apter for SportsKeeda.

Despite Rey saying he and Eddie were best friends, Chavo says Eddie had one best friend and it wasn’t Rey. Chavo says Rey found out Eddie died just like everyone else, but he did call Chris Benoit because he was Eddie’s best friend in wrestling. Chavo said Eddie’s best friend outside of the business was a man named Art Flores, and his third best friend was Chavo.

“Don’t get me wrong, he loved Rey. They just weren’t best friends. They didn’t travel together. They did have high regard for each other, absolutely. So when I said that — and it was basically stuff I did in 2007 where I [told Rey on TV] that you’ll never be a Guerrero and you’re jealous of the Guerreros… basically I was just messing around, kinda tongue-in-cheek, kinda joking. I didn’t come out hard or anything like that.”

Chavo Guerrero says the promoter told him that the exchange was good, and Chavo noted how it was because there is some truth in what he said and people love it. Chavo noted how Jerry Jarrett liked to say ‘real issues draw real money’, but denied it being a real issue with Rey now.

Chavo said that everyone freaked out about what he said, including the New York Post picking up his remarks.

“CM Punk ending up backstage at RAW, that’s wrestling news. Me telling Rey that you’re using the Guerrero name too much, that’s not really [news],” Chavo explained.

Chavo Guerrero says he sent Rey a text and said it’s not real heat and he was working, and Rey replied that he was wondering what he’d done before laughing it off. Chavo told Rey he was going to keep working and then addressed his Tweet about Rey “prostituting” the Guerrero name. Chavo suggested Rey donate money to charity or Eddie’s daughters, who don’t make royalties off of Eddie’s name.

“All of a sudden, people went crazy. I let it go for a little bit and then I said, ‘Hook, line and sinker, that’s how a heel talks.’ And then some people were like, ‘Ahh, you got us!’ Some people were like, ‘You’re just backtracking!’ Wrestling fans have a very — I love it and I hate it because it’s very hard for them to pick a side. The lines are very blurred with them.”

“It was a work, everybody! I was just showing everybody how [it’s done]. You want some news? Here’s some news, OK? Not real news. So everybody that’s latching onto that, like come on guys. Really?”

Chavo Guerrero said he could keep it going and dig into Rey more but it was just for fun and he was in character. Chavo closed by saying he didn’t back off due to getting heat because he doesn’t wrestle for anyone and it was just a gag.
