Chris Jericho: AEW Booking Wembley Stadium Is A ‘Hold My Beer’ Moment

Chris Jericho discusses AEW All In London at Wembley Stadium.

AEW will make their United Kingdom debut with the AEW All In at Wembley Stadium event at Wembley Stadium on August 27. The event will be a big test for the company, as Wembley Stadium seats roughly 90,000 people.

Speaking with Tim Battle and Eli on the Battleground Podcast, Jericho shared his thoughts on the announcement about the Wembley Stadium event. When asked to describe what he’s looking forward to the most, Jericho noted that he is excited because he’s a big fan of Queen’s performance there and the Freddy Mercury tribute.

“I think from a personal standpoint, obviously Wembley is one of the most famous arenas or stadiums ever,” Jericho said. “My favorite gate of all time took place at Wembley Stadium, which is Queen at Live Aid, and my favorite show of all time, which is the Freddy Mercury tribute in 1992 also took place there, which was amazing. Just to be there will be cool on both accounts.”

Jericho went on to describe how he believes booking Wembley Stadium is a great move for the company, and he explained that it was like a “hold my beer” moment as AEW continues to defy its doubters.

“From a business standpoint, I think it was a great move, it’s a big-time move for Tony Khan to book Wembley,” Jericho said. “There’s been a couple times over the years, the first time in Toronto, ‘Oh, you should have booked a stadium.’ Our first time in LA, ‘You should have booked a stadium.’ Well, this time, our first time in the UK, ‘you should have booked a stadium,’ and we do, and of course the people that say you should book a stadium are like, ‘You’re crazy, it’s too big.’ To me, I think we could have done the O2, which is a great arena. We could have done Craven Cottage, which is the venue that Tony owns, I believe, with the Fulham football club, which he owns, him and Shahid, his dad, own. I think going to Wembley is really like a, ‘Oh yeah? Hold my beer. Check this sh— out.'”

The former AEW World Champion also stated that he thinks the show will be massive, as it will be a cultural event that draws people in.

” I think it’s gonna be massive,” Jericho said. “I think it has the potential to sell even more than what the pundits are expecting because I think it’s gonna be more than just a wrestling event. I think it’s gonna be a cultural event. The fact is, when something becomes cool, that’s when people wanna go. For example, the Metallica shows this summer in the stadiums, I think people will go because it’s a stadium. ‘Let’s go check it out, man. I wanna be a part of this whole event.’

“Like the Super Bowl or something along those lines. ‘Let me just go.’ I think we’re gonna get that reaction, not to mention the fact that we have such a huge television presence in the UK and a huge fanbase there. It wouldn’t surprise me, I’m not guaranteeing it or predicting it, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we ended up with 60-70,000 people in that joint.”
