Konnan: Kenny Omega AAA Booking Hampered By Contract Negotiations

AAA sought to bring back Kenny Omega for TripleMania, but unfortunately, things didn’t pan out that way.

AAA kicks off TripleMania season this weekend as it hosts the first show in Monterrey, Mexico. Triplemania Monterrey will be headlined by a four-way matchup for the AAA Mega Championship featuring defending champion El Hijo del Vikingo, as he takes on Komander, Swerve Strickland, and Rich Swann. As it turns out, that specific lineup wasn’t always the plan.

Speaking with Haus of Wrestling, AAA booker Konnan revealed that the promotion wanted former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega to take part in the main event. Due to negotiations surrounding Omega’s AEW contract, however, “The Cleaner” couldn’t commit to the booking date.

“Originally we were going to bring in Omega but he was still negotiating with AEW and he wasn’t sure if he was going to stay or not,” Konnan explained. “So, we couldn’t commit, and he didn’t want to come here until he signed. So, that was out the window, boom. And then, after that, we asked for a couple of people from AEW and they weren’t available.”

As Omega was taken off the table, AAA eventually recruited another AEW talent — Swerve Strickland — who Konnan referred to as “an incredible wrestler.”

In late February, it was reported that AEW had opted to extend Omega’s contract in response to time off he accrued from injury. The exact length of the extension is still unknown, but Konnan believes that Omega did indeed re-sign to a long-term deal after his current extension was up.

“I’m assuming [he re-signed]. I never really asked him but there are plans for him in the future so I’m thinking he already signed,” Konnan said. “But, you know, he wasn’t sure if he was going to stay and WWE was talking to him. You know? So, we couldn’t get him to commit.”
