Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens are very proud of what they achieved at WrestleMania 39.
Newly crowned Undisputed WWE World Tag Team Champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn recently spoke to Ryan Satin of WWE on FOX following their big win at WrestleMania 39. When asked how it felt to be in the first tag team title match main event in WrestleMania history, Owens found it hard to put it into words.
“It’s very hard to put into words what it means to have done it here, what it means to have done it together, what it means to have that in front of our families,” Kevin Owens said. “Now, when that freakout hit, there was a real wave of emotion that was very unexpected somehow but incredible.”
Zayn, on the other hand, chose the word pride to describe how it felt to achieve something that many people believed was unattainable.
“I agree wholeheartedly of how hard it is articulate if I had to choose one that kind of comes to the forefront; it is pride,” Sami Zayn said. “When we talk specifically about here’s something that seemed unattainable, but we did it. And it’s not because we’re great or whatever; it’s because we were lucky enough to be a part of a really, really unbelievable storyline.
“And the storyline was so good that it broke a boundary that just you could not have expected a year, two, five, ten, 15 years ago, which is the Tag Team Titles’ main eventing WrestleMania. So I’m extremely proud to not only have done it, but all the build-up that got it to this point; very, very proud of that, but I mean, there’s a lot going on as well. But that comes to mind.”
Satin brings up the hug following the title win and how it reminded him of an image he saw of these two men on the independents. Owens said that photo was taken the night Zayn was heading to WWE, and he didn’t know when or if he would join him there.
“I know the picture you mean too; it’s the night he left; he was done. He was coming here, and I had no idea if I ever would or when I would get here,” Kevin Owens recalled. “Very emotional night for different reasons. So to do this again. I mean, It’s really hard to explain.”
Zayn then touched upon the reality of his friendship with Owens and how that all played into such a moment like them being able to main event WrestleMania 39 together.
“Well, so I said this in other interviews, but the fact that it’s with him and the reality of our friendship and everything like that, that’s been pretty well documented. It’s a constant reminder of where you’ve been,” Sami Zayn said. “Sometimes it’s hard when you’re on the hamster wheel, and you’re laser-focused with an objective in mind to lose perspective or to forget where you came from or how you got there.
“Typically, doing something like main eventing WrestleMania will force you to look back at where you came from but doubly or triply so when it’s with the guy that you started with. All this to say because it’s him. It’s like the reminders are everywhere. You know what I mean? Yeah, and that it’s here. The reminders are just everywhere I turn.”
