GUNTHER has had an incredible first year as part of the WWE main roster.
WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER recently sat down with Ariel Helwani of WWE on BT Sport to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked if it dawned on him at last year’s NXT Stand & Deliver that he would be heading up to the main roster, GUNTHER said he didn’t see it that way at the time as he still wasn’t sure when the call-up would happen.
“I don’t think I saw it that way because, obviously, I knew it was about time to move up. But then, still, there was just a rough somewhere after Mania or something like that. So I didn’t really know when things are going to happen,” GUNTHER admitted. “But I gotta say I didn’t really see it that way.”
When asked if he had any set goals that he wanted to accomplish during his first year on the WWE main roster, GUNTHER said he doesn’t look at things like that because he has already accomplished his main goal of making a living as a professional wrestler.
“Just in general for me. I think that’s where it’s different from myself than with most of my colleagues now, where my goal in my life was always I want to make a living being a wrestler. That’s my goal,” GUNTHER said. “And I achieved that like six or seven years ago, where I had to wrestle for ten years before that on the weekends.
“And that was something that was like, okay, that’s astonishing. Because in Germany or Austria back then, it’s such a niche. It’s like what we do; there is no realistic outcome to actually build up a business or something like that where it can actually live off. So everything that happens now, it just feels like the cherry on top, if that makes sense.
“And that’s how I try to approach it. I just focus on what’s right in front of me and make the best out of that. And give it my all, and then I can focus on the next thing. I’m not a guy for long-term goals, plans, and especially in this business, there’s a lot of things that are not in your hands that you cannot control. So my focus is more on the things I can control, myself, and get the most out of that.”
When asked if he was disappointed that he wasn’t stepping into the ring with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39, GUNTHER said while he’s hoping for that match to take place, he thinks it’s better that it’s not happening right now.
“I’m hoping for that match, but to be honest, I think it’s better that it’s not happening now,” GUNTHER said. “I think that moment we had in the Royal Rumble was at least everything I needed out of it right now.
“Because on the internet, they always see things pop up, but often they don’t translate in real life. But just the reaction we got for that moment we had there was like a real live confirmation for me that okay, people, they want to see this. But I got my stuff to do now, and he does what he does, and then let’s see what happens next year.”
