Brock Lesnar is set to face Omos at WWE WrestleMania 39, but the former WWE Champion reportedly had other potential opponents at different points, including Bray Wyatt.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reports that Lesnar’s road to WrestleMania has featured a number of options dating back to the fall of 2022. Sapp noted that, after Triple H and the new regime took over, the company pitched the idea of facing Lesnar to Stone Cole Steve Austin, who ultimately declined it. Later on, heading into WWE Survivor Series, internal documents listed Gunther as the planned opponent for Lesnar, as reported by WrestlingNews.co, but WWE went in a different direction.
In the report, Sapp wrote that Gunther’s plan has been established in recent months, and a match with Lesnar was not considered for an extended period of time. Given Lesnar’s feud with Lashley, a rematch was also on the table, but Lashley was paired up with Wyatt instead. The former Universal Champion was reportedly pitched as an opponent for Lesnar, but “The Beast Incarnate” was said to have nixed the idea.
As for Omos, Sapp wrote that the clash between Lesnar and the giant is the current plan, but sources hinted that while a “backup” is in place, this isn’t being factored into creative plans. Sapp confirmed that Lesnar personally approved the match with Omos.
Additionally, WrestleVotes implied that Vince McMahon pushed for the match, and while Fightful could not confirm that, sources close to Lesnar indicated that “could be true”. That being said, sources in WWE creative said that McMahon hasn’t had direct contact with creative, and the match was not a decision was not made by the former CEO.
WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.
