Sami Zayn Reveals How The Helluva Kick Actually Got Its Name

Sami Zayn is a helluva guy.

Zak Ralph of Love Wrestling spoke with Sami Zayn ahead of WWE Elimination Chamber in Montreal and the two spoke about the origins of one of Zayn’s patented in-ring moves. Zayn has used the Helluva Kick throughout his career and Ralph asked if it was linked to Archie Comics. The phrase “helluva” is used in the series in place of saying “hell of a”, but Zayn said he actually got it from an old WCW magazine.

“I don’t think I’ve ever told it in an interview, but if you want it, here it is — when I was a kid I had a WCW Magazine and I was reading some match results. And it said ‘Chris Jericho defeated Syxx’, or maybe it was the other way around, ‘with a helluva kick,’” Zayn said.

“It was written ‘helluva’ like that, so I thought it was a type of kick. I told this story to Excalibur, who now does commentary on AEW every Wednesday, but I told him this story one time at Denny’s after a PWG show,” Zayn explained. “We started calling the running Yakuza kick in the corner that I would do at the time, we started calling it the Helluva Kick. So that’s actually the real reason of that name.”
