It was announced at the 2023 Royal Rumble that Zelina Vega would be a featured commentator in Capcom’s Street Fighter 6.
SmackDown’s Zelina Vega was a recent guest on day one of IGN Fest to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about how she landed her commentary role on Street Fighter 6, Vega revealed that it came from a good friend of hers and mentioned that the character Vega is the inspiration for her last name.
“Well, that one came from a good friend of mine named Andrew, who asked me if I wanted to be a part of the project, which, to be honest, I thought he was kidding at first,” Zelina Vega admitted. “I was like, ‘You know this is a dream of mine. Don’t do this. Don’t play with my heart like that.’ But he was serious, and it was so cool to be a part of his team, and just I knew that I was representing for him too. So I was like, I have to bring it if I’m going to do this and be a part of such an amazing brand as Street Fighter, something that I’ve loved since I was a kid and the inspiration to my last name. I just had to bring it.”
Zelina Vega is a big gamer and spoke about how she fell in love with the Mortal Kombat franchise as a kid.
“Oh my gosh, so I loved Mortal Kombat when I was a kid. Actually, my mom was the person to get me into this,” Zelina Vega revealed. “So I remember one night she put my brother and I to sleep. And where we were, it was right next to the living room. And I just heard like these noises like fighting noises, and I was like, what is that? So I kind of peeked out, and I saw my mom playing Mortal Kombat, and I was like [gasp].
“So I went over to her, and she’s like, ‘Okay, you can play. Just don’t tell your dad. Alright, come on.’ So that’s how I started with Mortal Kombat. But I fell in love with Sindel, actually; that was part of the inspiration for this hair. So Sindel was my favorite in Mortal Kombat, and then Jade, and then I started cosplaying pretty young. So it was just something that just evolved. Like I said, Mortal Kombat, then Street Fighter. I fell in love with Vega. I thought he was so cool. And yeah, it’s just evolved from there.”
