Dax Harwood weighs in on The Gunns’ recent AEW World Tag Team Championship reign.
Speaking on FTR With Dax Harwood, Dax and co-host Matt Koon spoke about the state of the AEW tag team division. The Gunns won the titles from The Acclaimed on the February 8 episode of Dynamite, and Dax spoke about how the Gunns had a bit of an easier road to the top but they’ve come into their own in recent months.
“I got a lot of feelings on it, I guess. Trying to be diplomatic here. They’re a couple of guys who, I will say, study the craft and try to be better. They also are a couple of guys who made it to the top because of their dad, who their father is. So they’ve never had to be in the trenches, or they’ve never had to travel to these little shitty shows to make a buck or to get seen. So all they know is AEW, and all they know is national television wrestling. With that, they may not think it, and they may not be doing it on purpose, but with that, they think that everything should be catered to them. So personally, we have different thoughts and ideologies, and that’s okay. You’re not gonna get along with everyone. But I will say that there aren’t too many acts in professional wrestling that people absolutely despise, and they despise these guys. They get the ‘Ass Boys’ chants, and when [they] won the tag belts, the people were mad,” Harwood said. “If you think about what wrestling is, you want people to be mad, or you want them to feel a certain way, and they felt a certain way about that title change.
“Who knows what’s gonna happen in the future? Who knows where this story is going? But the thing is, there has been a story to this. There’s been a story to this for a year,” Harwood noted. “This is a year-long story that I wish the people would stop and think, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re right. There is a backstory. There is a long history between these two.’ This is just another chapter in that story. So congratulations to them. They’re the first-ever tag team championship they’ve ever had. So congrats to them, and I look forward to seeing what the Ass Boys and The Acclaimed do next.”
Harwood spoke more about The Gunns’ win feeling like an old-school moment, and he can’t wait to see how The Acclaimed comes back from the loss.
“It’s a feeling and a reaction that harkens back the older days of wrestling, whenever you did book for heat, and that’s how you drew your money, and that’s how you drew your fanbase, how you built them up. The thing is, that a lot of people don’t understand, this made the people feel even more for The Acclaimed, who are AEW’s biggest babyfaces, bar none. This makes them feel even stronger for these guys. In the wrestling world, and in life too, you have a redemption story. You always have a redemption story, and I can’t wait to see The Acclaimed‘s redemption story and see how much more the people care about them.”
During the show, Dax and Matt also announced FTR with Dax Harwood would be doing a live show in Los Angeles on WrestleMania weekend. Tickets for the event are available now at http://ftrwithdax.com.
