Cody Rhodes On WrestleMania: I Don’t Want To Shrivel Under The Lights, I Gotta Finish The Story

Cody Rhodes doesn’t want to get embarrassed on a big stage.

Speaking with Logan Paul on IMPAULSIVE, Cody Rhodes discussed facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. Cody said that the week-long celebration of wrestling keeps getting bigger every year, and he needs to make sure he’s at the top of his game.

“WrestleMania is the biggest wrestling show of the year, sports entertainment show, whatever vernacular you wanna use on it. But the whole wrestling community flocks to Mania. There’s about 1,100 indie shows that go on from literally, starting Wednesday of that week to the day before Mania. WrestleCon happens. It’s a wonderful event. Everybody comes to celebrate. Every WrestleMania gets bigger, so it’s not hyperbole or wrestler speak to say this is the biggest WrestleMania ever. We know going into this one, just from these preliminary gates, this is legitimately the biggest thing that’s ever been done in wrestling.

“The irony of the potential of a Rhodes going on last, when my dad spent eight years competing against WWE, I spent three and stirred up as much trouble as I could possibly stir up,” Cody explained. “The irony of the potential of going on last, under the brightest lights, on the grandest stage, is just why this place is so good. I’m sure there’s some hard feelings over things that happened here, but if a guy or girl is the thing, if they’re ready, if it’s them, then they’re moving it forward. They’re absolutely, ‘That’s what we’re gonna push.’ The idea of it, I don’t wanna end up like I’m TCU in the National Title game, where maybe I wasn’t supposed to be there. I don’t want to shrivel under the lights. But I am very much just now letting it all sink in, what we’re doing. I really want to let it all sink in now so that I can stop doing the, ‘This is amazing, it’s gonna be great.’ Like I said, you wanna pretend you’ve been in the end zone. I gotta show up, and we gotta deliver, and we gotta execute; whatever that situation is, whether I’m wrestling Roman Reigns, which is what it looks like, whatever it is, I gotta finish the story.”

Cody Rhodes said that Roman Reigns is holding the ultimate prize now, but he knows the fans going home happy is the ultimate goal.

“For those who don’t know, 1978, my dad won the WWE Title but it was by over-the-top-rope, a disqualification, it’s how he won the match. He put the belt on, big pantomime, the crowd’s excited, but then they took it away. So you won the match but the champion got to keep the title. I had that picture and that was my first dream ever. ‘I’m gonna get it. I’m gonna get it to him.’ I have the belt too, the original. I showed it to Vince when we had our first meeting. As much as that belt’s special, what Roman has is it,” Cody stated.

“The biggest WrestleMania of all time, the biggest wrestling show of all time. As much as I’d like to say that the most important thing is that I leave with the WWE Championship, the most important thing is the people have the best time of their lives. It really is.”
