Nick Khan says there’s absolutely no truth to the reports about an “imminent sale” of WWE to a group based in Saudi Arabia.
WWE has been the subject of many rumors and speculation since Vince McMahon announced his return to explore a potential sale of the company. On January 11, DAZN’s Steven Muehlhausen reported WWE had been sold to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and that the company would go back to being private. Muehlhausen also noted that it was unknown but expected that Vince McMahon would return to a creative role at some point.
Ariel Helwani later reported that there was no truth to the story, noting that sources told him “there is no deal in place at this precise moment” for WWE to be sold to anyone and the promotion was still exploring all options.
Now, WWE’s Nick Khan is speaking out about the sale reports, telling Bill Simmons on The Bill Simmons Podcast that the Saudi Arabia report is completely false.
“I think Vince is really happy with where the company is at, certainly that’s what he’s conveyed to me. What he said to me and what I’ve certainly experienced is, [Vince thinks], ‘Hey I’m 77 now. I want to explore all strategic alternatives, is there a sale out there? Is there a merger out there? What would make sense most for the company?’ Which is why when that Saudi thing [came up],” Khan explained, “Fake [story]. 100% fake. 100% made up, saying that there was an imminent transaction or whatever it was. Totally false.”
“It was absurd. It was nuts. And by the way, that person subsequently took down that tweet,” Khan stated. “Because again, when I’m saying it was 100% false, it was 100% false. So in this process, [Vince] is there to oversee it, he’s there to control it. I’m involved in it, Triple H is involved in it, the board is obviously involved, Triple H being on the board as I have the good fortune of being as well, and we’re going to see how it plays out. It should not be a lengthy process.”
